NON-VALUE ADDED
NVA work generates cost and reduces profit margin while increasing lead time & inventory.

Definition: Activities that you must perform today, but do not change the form of the product. These activities are process-related, and we do them because the process makes us do so.None of the NVA activities change the form of the product. Examples include: rework, "go-gets", looking for tools/materials/instructions, waiting, inspection, etc.

So, if value-added is "good" and non-value added is "bad," let's discuss NVA activities (also known as waste) that can be examined and eliminated.

There are 7 forms of NVA Waste:
1) Waiting waste: Operators, equipment or material waiting
2) Transportation waste: Moving product around the shop or people going to get items
3) Process waste: Fixing tools, dies, equipment. Set-ups, "go-gets" paperwork, meetings
4) Motion waste: Unnecessary movement, bending or reaching within a work area; safety, ergonomics
5) Quality waste: Rework, remakes or any loop in the system
6) Excess Inventory waste: Raw material, work in process or finished good inventory; having more than you need to complete today's orders creates poor cash-flow.
7) Over Production waste. Making more than your internal or external customer needs today

The 7 forms of NVA waste is what Lean Manufacturing is all about.

The object is to identify your waste, understand it and determine the root cause(s), design corrective actions for the root causes, develop a change plan, implement changes and measure the outcomes of the changes. This is our expertise and what we will show you how to do eliminate this waste through our Lean practices.
